Kathe Kollwitz

On a bicycle trip in West Flanders (Belgium) we rode through the battlefields of WW I.

We saw many war cemeteries in the neighbourhood of Yper en Diksmuide.  East of the river IJzer in the neighbourhood of Vladslo we visited a German war cemetery.   The serene cemetery is special because the son of the German female artist Kathe Kollwitz is buried there. In rememberance of het son she made two stone  statues, a man and a woman: " trauerndes Elternpaar" (mourning parentcouple). She modelled the head of the  man en the woman  after herself and her husband. The father looks down on a  tombstone, a few meters before him where his son is resting in the shadow of old oaks.
