constant permeke

flemish landscape

On our biking trip from Diksmuide to Brugge we came through a village called Jabbeke.

Jabbeke was the hometown of the Belgian artist Constant Permeke (1886-1952), the most important representative of Flemish expressionism. Besides a painter he was also a sculptor. One of his most famous sculptures (Niobe) is to be seen in the garden of the Kroller Moller Museum near Arnhem  in Holland. His house near Jabbeke is now a museum. The rustic and heavy Permeke with his vulnerable head painted like he looked. I appreciate his robust, sober but yet sensitive manner of painting very much.
