Hiroshige


In the Sieboldthuis in Leiden you can see a beautifull exhibition of woodblock prints by Hiroshige. He is one of the greatest Japanse masters of woodblock prints (ukiyo-e). Some of the prints shown are  very rare first prints. His prints are surprisingly modern in terms of composition. He was a master in creating perspective. Many prints are wide landscapes with in it tiny human beings busy with their daily sores. These images create a kind of melancholy mood we very well remember from the time we stayed in Japan
