Today we went for a stroll to the beach of Katwijk not far from Leiden. It was high tide, stormy and grey. I saw a brave artist fighting against the stormy wind to catch the wild waves en grey air in a painting. Some time ago I saw a fine tranquil seascape painted by the French impressionist Charles Daubigny in the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. But today's stormy sea reminds me more of a seascape made by the Dutch painter Jan Toorop (see left). Some hundred years ago he often came to Katwijk to paint the sea. I have a nice old photograph of him standing at the beach of Katwijk . I think the time has come for me to paint a Katwijk seascape.
